Nancy Zeltsman is a leading marimba performer, teacher, author and festival director. She has presented numerous recitals and marimba master classes across the United States as well as in Europe, Japan and Mexico. Zeltsman has recorded three solo CDs: Sweet Song, See Ya Thursday and Woodcuts; a marimba duo CD (with Jack Van Geem), Pedro and Olga Learn to Dance; and three CDs with Marimolin, a marimba/violin duo (with violinist Sharan Leventhal) that was active for eleven years (1985-1996).
Marimolin premiered nearly 80 pieces. In addition, Nancy has premiered dozens of marimba solos and mixed chamber works involving marimba. These include Paul Simon’s marimba solo, Amulet; Michael Tilson Thomas’ Island Music (scored for two featured marimbists, two “tutti” marimbists, and two percussionists); and William Thomas McKinley’s marimba concerto Childhood Memories. The latter was just released on CD with Boston Modern Orchestra Project.
Zeltsman is Chair of the Percussion Department at The Boston Conservatory, and an Associate Professor at Berklee College of Music. She has taught marimba at both institutions since 1993 in positions that were created for her.
Nancy is founder and Artistic Director of Zeltsman Marimba Festival, Inc., an annual two-week summer event (www.zmf.us). ZMF sponsored ZMF New Music: a special project to foster the creation of two-dozen intermediate-level marimba solos. These were premiered, published, and recorded for CD during 2009. Zeltsman’s marimba method, Four Mallet Marimba Playing: A Musical Approach for All Levels, published by Hal Leonard Corporation, is now available in its third edition. Encore Mallets produces her signature mallets: the “Nancy Zeltsman Series.” Zeltsman enthusiastically endorses Marimba One marimbas. She lives in Boston, MA. (www.nancyzeltsman.com)
